Amherst Golf Competes in Tufts and Williams Invitationals
Both the Amherst men’s and women’s golf teams traveled across Massachusetts to compete in tournaments over the weekend. The men’s team competed in the Tufts Invitational on April 17, while both teams headed northwest to Williamstown for the Williams Invitational on April 18.
In the Tufts Invitational, the men’s team shot a combined 347 to finish 59-over par.
First-year Tommy Whitley ’24 led the way for the Mammoths with a score of 81 (+9). Fellow first-years Jay Lassiter ’24 and Ben Byman ’24 completed the invitational with respective scores of 86 (+14) and 92 (+20).
At 88 (+16), Michael Bakshandeh ’21 had the third-best score among the Mammoths, while Paul Griessel ’21, who walked on to the team for the first time this season, scored 94 (+22).
The next day, both the men’s and women’s teams competed in the Williams Invitational.
In another successful performance on the course, Whitley was the top scorer for the men at 83 (+12) on the day, tying for 19th overall. Lassiter finished with a score of 88 (+17), with Griessel close behind with a score of 90 (+19). Byman scored 91 (+20) and Bakshandeh scored 93 (+23).
Amherst women’s golf placed second overall in the Williams Invitational. Priya Bakshi ’24 and Mina Lee ’22 tied for fifth place, along with Williams golfer Melinda Yuan — they all had a score of 78 (+7).
Jenny Hua ’24 and Isabelle Ouyang ’21 tied for 10th place, along with Katie Murphy of Middlebury College and Alaina McKeen of Hamilton College, with scores of 80 (+9).
Mehr Luthra ’24 tied for 15th place with Sofia Weinstein and Maddie Hong of Hamilton along with Jacqueline Slinkard of Middlebury — each shooting 82 (+11).
The next competition for both the men’s and women’s programs will be the NESCAC Championships on April 24-25 at Ledges Golf Club in South Hadley.
