Amherst Softball Keeps Undefeated Season Alive

On Saturday, April 10, the Amherst softball team hosted a double-header against Bowdoin College. The Mammoths won both games to keep their winning streak intact and move to 5-0 for the season. 

Pitcher Talia Bloxham ’22 started game one on the mound, marking the second time in as many weekends that Bloxham pitched a complete game. After Bowdoin hit a solo home run in the top of the first, Amherst responded with four first-inning runs off a pair of doubles by Maddie Procyk ’24 and Jess Butler ’23.

While Bowdoin never reclaimed the lead, they threatened to do so in the final inning. Down 5-4 entering the seventh, Bowdoin loaded the bases through two walks and a hit-by-pitch. With the game on the line, Bloxham forced a ground ball to second base to secure the victory. 

Rachel Lovejoy ’23 and Alyson Plaman ’21 led the Mammoths’ offense in game one. Plaman reached base twice on singles and Lovejoy was the only player on the field to record three hits.

Coming off of a phenomenal debut in which she was awarded NESCAC Pitcher of the Week, Procyk started game two on the mound and was stellar yet again, giving up only two runs on three hits throughout the game.

While the first game was close throughout, the Mammoths dominated in game two, totaling 10 explosive runs in the five-inning contest. Again, Amherst scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Shortstop Autumn Lee ’23 put the Mammoths on the board with a double down the left field line, bringing home the leadoff hitter Megan Taketa ’23. Lee led the way offensively in the second game with two hits, two runs and three RBIs, bringing her total season batting average to .500. 

Next weekend, Amherst will look to extend their winning streak as they face Hamilton College (2-3) in a three-game series.
